
GENERAL INFORMATION
- Starting Sociology with the ATSS is a CD-Rom
designed for use as part of an introduction to AS Sociology.
- It is designed to be compatible with both the AQA
and OCR specifications.
- The CD-Rom is interactive. Learning
material is followed by student self-assessment exercises. There
are over 50 of these. They include interactive timed word searches, multiple-choice
tests with feedback, gap-fill exercises, crosswords, matching items tests and short answer
quizzes.
- The material is presented in web pages and Powerpoint
"lectures." Powerpoint Viewer is included on the CD-Rom for those
who do not have Powerpoint on their machine.
- Notes can be printed to store in student
folders, in either Acrobat or Word format. Acrobat Reader and Word Viewer are
included on the CD-Rom for those who do not have these programs on their computer.
STUDENT SECTION
The material in the Student Section is
organised under the following topic headings.
- What is Sociology: a brief outline, with some
examples of sociological work.
- Concepts and Glossary: definitions of
introductory terms, a reference glossary, and presentations on key sociological concepts
- Identity: an introduction to gender,
ethnicity, social class and age.
- Societies: an outline of pre-modern, modern
and post-modern societies.
- Methods: an outline of the concept of
research, and some issues involved in the design of research. Examples of the use of
quantitative and qualitative approaches.
- Theory: an introduction to structural and
social action theories, consensus and conflict approaches, with specific outlines of
functionalism, Marxism, feminism, intepretive sociology, interactionism and postmodernism.
- Study Skills: guidance on organising folders,
managing time, reading, making notes and writing sociologically, with some self-assessment
material.
- Assessment: General Information about the AQA
and OCR specifications, with some sample student answers with commentary.
TEACHER SECTION
- A brief summary of the Student Sections and
some suggestions as to how the material might be used.
- A menu of all Powerpoint "lectures."
- A menu of all self-assessment exercises (52).
- A self-running "promo" explaining
what sociology is, which can be used on Open Days.
